A short wax carving course, focusing on various design forms translated into jewellery, from sculpture to architecture and product design. Each attendee will get to experiment with wax-working techniques to produce a finished ring, which will be cast in bronze or silver.
WHAT WILL I DO?
During the session you will have the opportunity to carve a sculptural ring.
The first hour will include time to look at, discuss and sketch out ideas with a focus on form, texture and scale. taking design inspiration from a wide selection of resources referencing a range of design ideas from outside the sphere of jewellery, to explore the versatile nature of wax and lost wax casting, ranging from sculpture to ceramics and furniture design.
You will then use a variety of wax working techniques, including filing, carving, surface decoration, hot wax and soft wax moulding to produce your own piece that will later be cast in either recycled silver or bronze.
All materials are provided, and there will be lots of books and objects available, but please free to bring any images or items you would like to discuss if you like.
WHO IS IT FOR?
Suitable for beginners to intermediate skill level, the finished result will reflect experience and skill to some extent.
HOW LONG IS IT?
The workshop will run for 3 hours
WHAT WILL I LEAVE WITH?
Your finished carving will be cast and finished by Bonnie, and ready to collect/post out in 4 weeks.
ABOUT THE TUTOR
Bonnie Powell creates wearable objects using traditional casting methods and hand-forming techniques. Her collections inhabit the space between craft processes and simple designs for modern wear.
Continuing to draw on the contrast between modernist jewellery design and the abstracted fluid proportions of the human body, the new pieces subtly lean into the forms found in ancient artefacts.
