Learn how to make a traditional shrink pot, turning a fresh log into a finished pot, using traditional woodworking hand tools.
What is a shrink pot? “An old method of making wooden tubs by hollowing a log out then fitting a base. The ingenious thing is if you hollow the log out whilst it is green, cut a groove for the base to fit and put a loosely fitting dry base in then the pot shrinks on to the base making a nice tight fit.” - Robin Wood
These vessels would have been familiar to the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons, a traditional form with endless design possibilites.
WHAT WILL I DO?
You will be taken through all of the steps to create your own shrink pot from a greenwood log using a variety of techniques and hand tools. Shrink pots are hollowed out with a groove cut in the base and a dry disc of wood is inserted into the groove. Then it’s left to dry/shrink. The end result is one of the earliest forms of a container or vessel.
Participants are introduced to the subject and can see examples of shrink pots that Andy has made. Andy will outline health and safety points at the start and throughout as required and provides all the different tools for participants to use to take you through the stages of the process from log to finished shrink pot.
WHO IS IT FOR?
Beginner to experienced woodworkers. Some people go at different paces and Andy will provide the appropriate levels of support to individuals.
HOW LONG IS IT?
The workshop will run for 5-6 hours
WHAT WILL I LEAVE WITH?
A hand made shrink pot (andextras if you make more in the time)
