Sat 4 July, 10 am: Intro to Sashiko with Lilly Filsell (Manchester Mending Club)

£40.00

Learn Sashiko: a Japanese embroidery technique used traditionally to repair workwear with visible stitching. Often used to repair denim, sashiko reinforces worn areas or holes in clothes to make them stronger, whilst allowing you to customise your clothes!

WHAT WILL I DO?

Attendees will learn about the history of Sashiko and its applications. They will bring in a garment they need to fix (ideally cotton/denim) and learn how to by using Sashiko embroidery.

You will start by learning a basic running stitch to create a patch to use on the item you are repairing. You will then have a demonstration of the technique and be shown examples of the finished product. You can then decide how you want to approach your repair: make it subtle or standout based on your own style.

From there, you will start your Sashiko stitches and have ongoing support as you stitch, with visual aids to help you as you go.

WHO IS IT FOR?

The course is suitable for an absolute beginner, but some basic hand-sewing skills are helpful.

HOW LONG IS IT?

The workshop will run for 2 hours

WHAT WILL I LEAVE WITH?

A repaired item and the skills to repair more in the future!
